Adam Ness is a name I hadn’t known before September 4th, but after his stunning performance at The Sultan Room in Brooklyn during the Vybe Vault RnB event, I can’t stop thinking about him. As a fellow Detroiter, I felt an instant connection to his artistry and authenticity. Adam Ness isn’t just another performer—he’s a powerhouse of soul, blending elements of R&B, funk, jazz, rock, and more into a style that feels timeless and revolutionary all at once.
Hailed by Vocalo as one of its "Top 10 Artists to Watch" and described by Earmilk as an "R&B legend," Adam has built a reputation that speaks volumes. From his debut album #HighPlaces to his critically acclaimed sophomore release Sagittarius, he’s delivered tracks like “Blush,” “Pretty Boy,” and “Houzkatz,” showcasing his ability to merge vulnerability with groove. His music has graced soundtracks for shows like The Chi and Queen Sugar, and he’s collaborated with artists like Noname, contributing to her groundbreaking Room 25 album.
While his accolades are impressive, it’s his live performance that truly sets him apart. Walking into The Sultan Room for the Vybe Vault RnB event, I had no idea what to expect. When Adam Ness took the stage, though, he immediately commanded attention with his effortless charisma and style. Dressed in a relaxed, yet refined ensemble—a patterned shirt and loose trousers—he exuded a laid-back confidence that mirrored his hometown roots.
From the moment he sang his first note, Adam’s voice wrapped around the room like velvet—smooth, soulful, and deeply emotive. Backed by an incredible live band, his music came alive in a way that felt almost cinematic. The band’s jazzy grooves, heavy basslines, and intricate improvisation elevated every track, creating a lush soundscape that perfectly complemented Adam’s soaring vocals.
The performance wasn’t just technically flawless—it was deeply personal. Adam has a gift for weaving personal narratives into his music, and his ability to shift seamlessly from funky, upbeat jams to heartfelt, vulnerable ballads was mesmerizing.
What stood out most to me, as a fellow Detroiter, was how much of home Adam carries with him. Detroit has a rich musical history, one that’s rooted in soul, authenticity, and resilience, and Adam embodies all of it. His artistry feels like a bridge between the classic sounds of Motown and the future of R&B—a perfect blend of nostalgia and innovation.
The Vybe Vault RnB event at The Sultan Room was the perfect stage for Adam to showcase his immense talent. The intimate setting allowed his voice and energy to shine, and the chemistry between him and his band added an electric spark to the night. Despite the undeniable polish of the performance, there was a warmth and spontaneity that made it feel like we were witnessing something unique—something you’d never experience the same way twice.
Though I came to The Sultan Room unaware of Adam Ness, I left as a devoted fan. His ability to connect with the audience, both through his music and his presence, is a rare and beautiful gift. He doesn’t just perform—he shares pieces of himself with every lyric, every note, every gesture.
Adam Ness has rightfully earned his reputation as “The Music Bender” and a “master entertainer.” His ability to channel the influences of legends like Prince, Aretha Franklin, and Erykah Badu into something distinctly his own is nothing short of extraordinary. If you haven’t yet experienced his music, do yourself a favor and dive into it. And if you get the chance to see him live, don’t hesitate. Adam Ness isn’t just an artist to watch—he’s an artist to treasure.
