Lalah Hathaway, daughter of soul music icon Donny Hathaway, was destined for musical greatness. With a career spanning over three decades, she has released a series of critically acclaimed albums and has collaborated with a plethora of renowned artists. Her unique sound, which effortlessly blends soul, jazz, R&B, and gospel, continues to resonate with audiences of all ages.
In anticipation of her upcoming show in Detroit, we had the chance to ask Lalah a few questions submitted by her fans in the city.
ME: You are coming to the D on June 5th and the city is excited! We did a little poll and here are a few questions that Detroiters came up with for you. Do you remember your 1st show in Detroit? If so, when and where was it?
LH: I do not! It had to be the early 90’s… It is all a blur at this point. One of my favorite venues anywhere is the Fox Detroit.
ME: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in Detroit?
LH: Believe it or not, I almost never really have time to eat at restaurants when I’m on the road! We usually arrive late the night before or the day of a gig, and I try not to eat late at night or too much on show days… I did enjoy Fishbones!
ME: Who are some of your favorite producers that you have worked with in the past and who would you love to work with in the future?
LH: I have been really blessed to be able to work with and learn from many of the musicians that I admire! Warryn Campbell, Phil Beaudreau, Pharrell, Marcus Miller, Terrace Martin… There are still so many giants I would love to work with! Timbaland, Babyface, Rick Rubin…
ME: Do you have any pre-show rituals?
LH: My pre-show rituals are pretty simple! I try to warm up with my singers, which a lot of the time is just actual laughter! I also love a good hot lemon ginger and honey drink.
ME: June 5th you are at the legendary Aretha Franklin Amphitheater (formerly Chene Park) with Mike Phillips. What can us Detroiters expect?
LH: Expect a great show! After 35 years there is so much material that invariably some folks don’t get to hear their favorite song, but we try our best to pack in as much music from as many parts of my catalog as possible!
