Claressa Shields, born on March 17, 1995, in Flint, Michigan, has risen from humble beginnings to become a trailblazer in women’s boxing. Introduced to the sport by her father, Clarence “Bo Bo” Shields, a former amateur fighter, Claressa found solace and purpose in boxing from the age of 11. At just 17, Shields made history at the 2012 London Olympics by becoming the first American female boxer to win a gold medal.
